本片记录了二战中1943年12月8-17日期间美军在意大利山城圣彼得洛击退德军的英勇战役。圣彼得洛镇位于意大利卡西诺山以南，是解放罗马，突破德军“冬季战线”的要塞。
导演约翰?休斯顿（John Houston）及摄影师朱尔斯?巴克（Jules Buck）到达圣彼得洛时已是战役的最后一天，片中多个战争场景均为事后重现。本片因战争场景的写实性得到马歇尔将军的重视，被用于军方训练。1991年被美国国会图书馆选入“国家电影记录册”。
